The Chief Observer of the European Union Election Observation Mission, Ivars Ijabs, has described the current election environment in Bangladesh as “positive and encouraging” ahead of the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Ijabs said that around 60 long-term EU observers have been working across the country since early January. Short-term observers have also started their activities to monitor the voting process.

He mentioned that observers from all 27 EU member states, along with representatives from Norway, Switzerland, and Canada, are participating in the mission. This international presence aims to ensure transparency and credibility in the electoral process.

According to Ijabs, the observation team has held meetings with political parties, candidates, election officials, and local authorities. Most of them expressed optimism about the upcoming election and hoped for a peaceful and fair voting process.

He noted that voters are showing growing interest in participating, and a festive atmosphere is visible in many regions. However, he also acknowledged that some areas still need improvement, which are being discussed with the relevant authorities.

Ijabs expressed hope that the upcoming election could mark a new chapter in Bangladesh’s democratic journey. He emphasized that a free, fair, and inclusive election would strengthen public trust in democratic institutions.

Political analysts believe that the positive assessment by international observers will help enhance the credibility of the election both at home and abroad.
