Historic India–EU Trade Deal Sparks U.S. Concerns

The European Union (EU) and India have finalized a historic trade agreement after nearly two decades of negotiations. Under the deal, both sides will gradually reduce tariffs on most goods, although certain sensitive sectors are excluded.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessant criticized the pact, saying Europe is prioritizing economic interests over geopolitical and energy security concerns. “The U.S. has made more sacrifices. We imposed a 25% tariff on Indian goods due to oil imports from Russia, yet Europe has finalized a trade deal with India,” he stated.

President Donald Trump has not commented publicly on the agreement, but White House sources suggest Washington is not pleased.

Meanwhile, India’s Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri assured that U.S.–India relations remain strong and positive, with the possibility of future trade agreements.

Analysts note that beyond economic benefits, the deal acts as a strategic safeguard for Europe against unpredictable U.S. trade policies and tariffs.
