Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, emphasized that the only sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis is the safe and dignified repatriation of over one million Rohingya refugees to Myanmar’s Rakhine State. He noted that since the root of the problem lies in Myanmar, the resolution must also originate there.

Dr. Yunus expressed concern that prolonged stays in refugee camps, coupled with limited access to technology and opportunities, are creating frustration among young Rohingya, posing potential threats to regional stability.

During the meeting with the newly appointed UNHCR Country Representative, the issue of declining international funding for refugee camps was highlighted. The discussion also covered the need for enhancing self-reliance and livelihood opportunities for refugees. Dr. Yunus called on the international community to maintain humanitarian support and apply pressure on Myanmar to expedite repatriation. He expressed hope that the new UNHCR leadership would play a stronger role in resolving the crisis and that Bangladesh would continue to ensure peaceful, inclusive, and credible elections.
