The International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina to death for committing crimes against humanity during the July uprising last year.

Among the other two convicts, former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal was sentenced to death in the same case.

Besides, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, now a state witness in the case concerning alleged crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising, was sentenced to five years' imprisonment in the case.

The three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, handed down the verdict amid tight security and a packed courtroom.

Earlier, the verdict reading began at around 12:30 pm.

The proceedings from the courtroom of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 were broadcast live on Bangladesh Television.

This is the first verdict in a case related to the state’s crackdown during the July Mass Uprising.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened in and around the court complex, with personnel from the Bangladesh Army, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police deployed at all entry points.
